Avoid Hair Transplant Regret

Finding a doctor and practice you trust to perform your hair transplant can feel like an uphill slog sometimes.

There are a lot of hair clinics out there vying for your attention, but not all of them are equal.

Some are good, some are excellent, and some, well… some you should steer clear of altogether.

But how do you figure out which ones to avoid, so you can focus on finding the best hair restoration practice for your needs?

Here are some warning signs to look out for.

Hair Restoration Isn’t Their Primary Focus

A lot of med spas and dermatology clinics seem to have added hair restoration to their list of offerings lately.

While med spas and skin clinics can be a convenient choice for simple aesthetic procedures, hair transplantation is a much more demanding discipline.

It takes great surgical skill and practice to ensure the best hair transplant results for patients.

That’s why you want to make sure that whoever you choose for your hair transplant does this as their primary focus.

For the best outcomes, choose a practice that specializes specifically in surgical hair loss treatment.

They Are Vague About Who Will Be Performing Your Surgery

Although it’s very safe and minimally invasive, hair transplantation is a surgery.

So you may be surprised to learn that in some states and countries, it’s perfectly legal for hair restoration surgery to be performed entirely by a medical tech, physician, or robot.

This isn’t the best idea.

According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), hair transplants should only be performed by a highly trained physician – that is, a medical doctor – with years of experience and training in this field.

Not all practices offering hair transplants can guarantee this, so you need to be sure to ask who will be performing your hair transplant.

If the person isn’t an MD, or if the clinic isn’t forthcoming about who will be performing your procedure, you should probably keep on looking.

Be sure to ask about the physician’s credentials, too.

Ideally, you want someone who not only has a medical degree from a prestigious institution, but also years of training and practice in hair restoration.

Look for certifications from governing bodies like the ISHRS, the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgeons, and IAHRS, the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons.

Members of these professional organizations represent the highest in knowledge, proficiency and patient safety, so their directories can be a great resource in your search.

High-Pressure Sales Tactics and Too-Good-To-Be-True Pricing

You should never feel pressured to make a quick decision about your hair restoration procedure.

A respectable practice will be happy to let you ask a lot of questions and provide you with informative answers so you can make the right decision for your needs.

Another red flag is when a clinic offers a high number of grafts for a low, low price – these are often bait-switch tactics where they add on other charges later.

Or it may be a sign that the clinic rushes through their work or relies on surgical techs or robots for the procedure.

The good news is that quality care can be quite affordable, you just have to know how to find it.

You Don’t Feel Comfortable During Your Consultation

You should always schedule a consultation before deciding on a hair restoration practice for your procedure.

While you’re there, take the time to notice how well the staff cares for you, how willing they are to answer questions, and how the facilities and staff make you feel.

  • The Office: Is the facility clean and well taken care of? Do they use up-to-date technology and equipment?
  • The Doctor: How much time do you get with the hair restoration surgeon vs his or her staff? If you spend your whole consultation with a surgical tech or sales person – and not the doctor – you should probably keep looking.
  • The Conversation: Are you comfortable asking all of your questions? Do you feel like the doctor and staff are listening to you? A good hair restoration clinic will make sure all of your questions are answered thoroughly before you schedule your procedure.

This is an important decision, so listen to your instincts, especially if you notice things that give you pause.

FAQ

Do you have to be a medical doctor to perform a hair transplant?

Not always.

In some states and overseas, it’s perfectly legal to have a hair transplant performed entirely by a medical assistant or nurse practitioner, even though the ISHRS recommends strongly that the surgery be done by a licensed physician.

This is why it’s so important for patients to ask who will be performing their hair transplant beforehand.

How can I vet different hair restoration practices?

Look up patient reviews to hear what actual patients thought about their experience and results.

You can also look up physicians on the sites of the most respected professional organizations for hair restoration.

ABHRS, IAHRS and ISHRS are all great resources in your search for an excellent provider.

If the practice website doesn’t list a physician and include a bio, that may be a warning sign that you need to steer clear.
