A Tale of Two Atlanta Hair Transplant Procedures

The Difference The Doctor Can Make

Ed recently had his second hair restoration surgery. His first was three years ago and this fall, he saw Dr. Danyo at North Atlanta Hair Restoration. According to Ed, these two experiences could not have been more different.

The Big Brand Hair Transplant You See On TV

If you were to describe Ed, it would be that he is warm and funny.

“What can I say? I like attention,” he laughs, and it echoes around the room. “But I wasn’t feeling great about the attention I was getting.” It turns out he was self-conscious about his hair and tired of wondering if others noticed his thinning hairline.

“I wanted more hair,” he says, “It was pretty straightforward.”

When he decided it was time to bite the bullet and pay for a surgery, he wanted to go with the best, most knowledgeable practice. So, he chose a national brand with a lot of clout behind it.

He was nervous about having a hair transplant, but his surgeon calmed his nerves. He recommended a traditional Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT). In this procedure, a strip of the patient’s own hair is removed from the back of the scalp, follicles are extracted, and a scar is left behind.

Overall, Ed was happy with his experience. But there were some red flags in his recovery that didn’t sit right with him.

“The day after my surgery, I woke up and my face was deformed,” he says. “I panicked – I thought I was dying.

He called the doctor’s office, who calmly told him that what he was experiencing was normal. He felt better after speaking with the receptionist, but it still irked him.

“I just wish they’d told me in advance,” he says. “If I’d been prepared for it, I don’t think it would have been a big deal. But to see your face all misshapen – without knowing what was happening, it was traumatizing.”

He also didn’t give him much preparation in terms of aftercare. “Mostly Google helped me get through it, but I was bedridden for a couple of weeks. It was exhausting.”

Getting The Right No-Shave Hair Transplant Procedure

This year, Ed was ready to have another procedure. He reached back out to his original doctor, figuring it would be easiest to return to the same office.

When he spoke with their office, though, he realized that something was different – the entire staff.

“Everyone was gone. My surgeon, my counselor – even the receptionists. I don’t think there was a single person there who had been there from before.”

As though the high turnover wasn’t bad enough, Ed now found himself on the receiving end of a hard sell.

“I felt like I was buying a car for my head,” Ed says. “When I spoke to my new counselor, it was like talking to a salesman. We didn’t talk about the procedure or safety; it was all price, price, price.”

Ed had some misgivings, so he decided to wait a few weeks. Meanwhile he kept receiving increasingly urgent phone calls. In one of them, the counselor insisted that he “needed to have it done by a certain date” – or it would be “too late.”

That was the last straw. “That kind of sales language, it was so inappropriate. They made me feel like a number.”

Ed Found Dr. Danyo

Ed turned to Google. He searched for practices in the Atlanta area offering hair transplants. We, North Atlanta Hair Restoration, was one of the first results.

He read the reviews and didn’t see anything negative. He spoke with our receptionist to set up a consultation and because he lives in Mableton, she suggested he send pictures instead of making the drive to their office.

Ed sent in pictures of his head and hair and expected to hear back from the practice within a few weeks. He was shocked when he received a call that afternoon.

“It was Dr. Danyo himself!” Ed was impressed, “The doctor himself calling me – not having to jump through hoops, hearing from him directly – it meant so much.”

Dr. Danyo didn’t make any hard sell. The doom-and-gloom approach that had turned Ed off was nowhere to be found.

“He said from analyzing my pictures, he could tell I was a good candidate. He didn’t try to scare me, and he gave me options and described how it would work ‘if’ I chose to go with him.”

That “if” was important to Ed. “He wanted me to be comfortable; he didn’t try to force my hand.”

A Different Kind of Transplant

Ed was excited to try Dr. Danyo’s approach.

Dr. Danyo specializes in Shave-less Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), where individual hair follicles are moved from one location on the body to another. No-shave FUE is preferable to many clients because the recovery time is faster than FUT, the results tend to look more natural and there is no scaring.

Great Results, Better Support

As so often happens, life got in the way. Ed had to cancel and reschedule his appointment twice before he was able to go in.

“I was afraid they would think I was crazy or had cold feet,” he says, “but they worked with me and saw me when I could make it happen.”

His No-shave FUE procedure was on November 14th, and Ed couldn’t be happier. The process was long, about 7 hours, but the office was comfortable and bright. He even watched movies while Dr. Danyo was working.

“They brought me lunch and everything,” Ed recalls.

Best of all, when the procedure was done, they didn’t just kick him out the door. Dr. Danyo gave him information about aftercare and even sent him home with a spray bottle and other tools to use in the recovery process.

“The first three days after the transplant are the most critical, and he let me know that,” Ed said. “I felt much more prepared.”

It’s been about a month since the procedure, and Dr. Danyo has already called several times to check on him. “He’s been attentive,” Ed says with a smile.

“Every step of the way was better. I won’t need to call him up in a panic and ask where my hair is. Dr. Danyo just knows what he’s doing, and I trust him.”
