What Makes a Great Hair Restoration Surgeon?

Finding a great hair restoration surgeon isn’t as easy as it should be.

There are a lot of practices out there competing for your attention, but not all of them have the credentials and experience you want for something this important.

So with that in mind, let’s talk about what makes a hair restoration surgeon truly exceptional and how to find the best one for your particular needs.

Education, Training and Experience

It might sound obvious, but your hair restoration surgeon should be, well, an actual MD, a medical doctor with a degree and the proper licensing to practice.

This is worth noting because not all hair restoration practices have surgeons or even physicians performing their procedures; many use surgical techs or robots for all or most of the most important steps.

That isn’t great, because although modern hair restorations are minimally invasive and very safe, they’re still surgeries that require a high level of expertise.

So be sure to ask who will be performing your hair transplant and then screen the provider for a few important credentials:

  • Medical degree: Find out what kind of medical credentials the hair restoration provider has. Many list this on their website bio or check LinkedIn for detailed education information. Vet the medical schools listed, too, to make sure they are respected institutions.
  • Surgical training: Doctors who have trained in surgery tend to be at the top of their field. Surgical experience also helps doctors master the challenging intricacies of hair transplantation.
  • Experience: How long have they been performing hair transplants, and what kinds of procedures are they most expert at? You want a physician trained and experienced in the latest and most advanced techniques—specifically, the type you plan to have.

This is one of the most life-changing decisions you’ll ever make, so don’t be afraid to ask questions and do your research.

A respectable practice should be glad to all your questions, and the internet can be a great resource, too.

Check out the hair restoration practice’s website, the doctor’s bio page, and more to find out all you need to know about the person who may be performing your procedure.

Certifications From Professional Organizations

Professional organizations help vet providers to make it easier for patients to find the best hair replacement surgeons for their needs.

Many also offer professional certifications that recognize the top practitioners in their fields.

For hair restoration, there are a few organizations of note:

  • ABHRS: The American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery is an internationally recognized board certification focusing on hair restoration surgery for physicians worldwide. Surgeons recognized as Diplomates have demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in their fields and practice habits consistent with safe, aesthetically sensitive hair restoration surgery.
  • IAHRS: The International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons is committed to hair transplant patient education and safety. Their members represent some of the most elite in the discipline, so be sure to look for your provider in their directory.
  • ISHRS: The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons is an international non-profit medical society dedicated to the highest standards of medical practice and ethics. Their directory of Fellows recognizes members who meet its exceptional educational standards.

Vetting potential providers for membership in these professional organizations can help you find the best hair restoration surgeons in the field.

Looking for special certifications and training can also help you find the best of the best, so be sure to do thorough research before choosing your hair restoration surgeon.

FAQ

Do you have to be a doctor to perform a hair transplant?

Not necessarily.

In some states, it’s perfectly legal to have a hair transplant performed entirely by a physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner, even though the ISHRS recommends strongly that the surgery be done by a licensed physician.

This is why it’s so important for patients to ask who will be performing their hair transplant beforehand.

How can I find out the medical background of a hair transplant provider?

Check the practice website for physicians’ bios, or look doctors up on sites like LinkedIn for a complete list of educational and professional experience.

You can also call and ask for a provider’s professional and educational credentials. Most practices will be glad to give this information out to prospective patients—and if they aren’t, consider it a red flag.

What other ways should I use to vet hair restoration surgeons?

Look at patient reviews and check out before and after photos to hear what actual patients thought about their experience and results.

You can also look up your provider on the sites of the most respected professional organizations for hair restoration.  ABHRS, IAHRS and ISHRS are all great resources in your search for an excellent provider.
